A small band of horses stands high on an open ridge, dwarfed by an immense and restless sky. Against the scale of the landscape, their quiet presence speaks to a life shaped by weather, instinct, and the changing seasons.
Inspired by the horses of the Upper Nicola Reserve at Douglas Lake, British Columbia, the painting reflects a herd that spends much of the year roaming freely across the range. Gathered only once or twice a year for weaning and branding, they otherwise move largely beyond human intervention, finding their own way across the land.
Beneath a Restless Sky considers the relationship between these horses and the country that sustains them. The horses are intentionally small within the composition, allowing the landscape and shifting sky to become as much the subject as the herd itself.
Framed in a natural unstained wood floater frame ready to be installed.
